What is the Gold Award?

The Girl Scout Gold Award is a national award and a personal challenge that a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador may choose to pursue.

Earning The Girl Scout Gold Award requires a suggested 80 hours of planning and implementing a challenging, large-scale project that is innovative, engages others, and has a lasting impact on its targeted community with an emphasis on sustainability.

Since 1916, the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award, has represented excellence and leadership for girls everywhere!

Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award puts you among an exceptional group of women who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world (less than 1% of all Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scout Gold Award). With talent, passion, commitment and determination, you, too, can make changes in your community and impact people around the World!

The Girl Scout Gold Award Process

Prerequisites:
  • Have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award as a Girl Scout Cadette and complete one Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Leadership Journey
OR
  • Complete two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Leadership Journeys

Upon completion of prerequisites:

  • Attend a GSEM Gold Award Workshop
  • Formulate a Project plan, recruit a Project Advisor and complete the Girl Scout Gold Award Project Proposal paperwork
  • Submit Gold Award Project Proposal for review, interview and approval by the GSEM Gold Award Advisory Committee by 1st day of the month, Sept-Jun

Upon approval of Girl Scout Gold Award Project:

When your project is approved by the GSEM Girl Scout Gold Award Advisory Committee, you will receive official approval to begin your Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project. At that time you are ready to implement your project.

If you do not submit and receive project approval from the committee prior to beginning your project, the project is inadmissible and project’s final report will not be considered eligible.

Upon completion of your Girl Scout Gold Award Project:

You must submit the Girl Scout Gold Award Final Report by the 1st of the month, Sept-Jun to be reviewed by the committee that month. Within 2-4 weeks of submission, you will receive written approval or feedback from a committee member, if additional steps need to be taken to complete your project as agreed and approved in your original project proposal or revisions.

Upon approval of your Final report - you may list the Girl Scout Gold Award on college & scholarship applications.

NEW- FINAL STEP IN THE GSEM GOLD AWARD APPROVAL PROCESS 2012-2013

In the past, after approval of the Gold Award Final Report, Gold Awardees were required to meet with the Gold Award Advisory Committee to evaluate the outcomes of their Gold Award project.

GSUSA Standards of Excellence now require girls to EDUCATE and INSPIRE others as the last step in the Girl Scout Gold Award approval process.

In 2013 Gold Awardees will participate in the first annual Gold Award Showcase.  Gold Awardees design a display that will inform others about their project. They will Celebrate their accomplishments with Girl Scouts, family and friends as they SHARE their successes and INSPIRE others about their Gold Award Project

Recognition

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM)  honor Girl Scout Gold Awardees with a special recognition ceremony and reception in June.

Awardees are presented the Girl Scout Gold Award pin, and various certificates of recognition from other organizations.

To be recognized at Reflections the Girl Scout Gold Award Project must be completed and Final Report submitted by March 1st of the ceremony year.  Final reports received after March 1- girls will be recognized at the next year’s ceremony.

GSEM Girl Scout Gold Awardee’s are recognized with a photo and a short description of their project on this unique indoor display.  

Showcased at Girl Scout and community events through out the year, the Girl Scout Gold Award Display is a special recognition by Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri.

Milestones

Ten year, 13 year and Graduating Seniors are recognized with a certificate from GSEM to document a girl’s commitment to Girl Scouting.

To receive certificates, fill out the Milestones Request form and mail by March 1st to Girl Scout Gold Award Staff Advisor.

Girl Scout Gold Award Advisory Committee

The GSEM Girl Scout Gold Award Advisory Committee exists to support Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors through the process of earning their Girl Scout Gold Award.

The committee puts in place the framework and approval process for the award. It is typically comprised of community members, educators, key volunteers, and young women who have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award.

The committee’s role is to ensure that girls’ projects meet the national guidelines.
